Light Yagami is quick to adapt to whatever situation is presented to him. To understand him, you must acknowledge that there are three distinct layers to him: The casual Light that's used for public appearances, Light's personal thoughts and feelings, and how he actually is when viewed objectively. Light struggles with becoming close to others intellectually, which results in him becoming distant with them emotionally. Light has an immense loathing towards criminals, especially those who commit sexual assault. What he hates most is seeing them get away with their actions so easily and making a fool of the justice system.

Light was raised with the philosophy that it's simply not in his nature to fail. From cram school teachers, to his family, to NPA employees he doesn't even know, Light is casually expected to be the best. Light was raised the Kanto reigon of Japan, with his upper-class family giving him all the support he could ever want. His mother, Sachiko, acts as the loving mother and housewife, while his father, Soichiro, is a police officer. Sayu is his lazy yet excitable sister obsessed with idols.When Light was young, he began playing tennis as a hobby to keep himself entertained aside from academics. He quickly learned and adapted to the team enviroment, making himself one of the favorite students of his tennis instructor.

When he was 10 years old, there was an incident regarding his tennis instructor. She made him promise not to say anything, and to stay in the national tournament and see it to the end. Light reluctantly agreed, yet he announced he was hanging up his racket right after he won. The cause for this is still unknown, since Light "just isn't the type to quit."Afterwards, Light focused purely on academics, but he still put in an effort to stay healthy.

Fast forward a few years and Light is at the top of his classes in Daikoku Private, an elite high school that certainly isn't cheap to attend. While Light has a habit of flaunting his efforts around his mother and sister, he shows a sense of humility around his father. His ability to play roles is something that's been nurtured, expected of him, and normalized by the society he grew up in, so it's not suprising he's able to do it so perfectly. He's grown up in a safe enviroment, which makes him a tad bit naïve, contributing to his black-and-white sense of morality.

Boring. That's all his life was at this point.
Everything came so easy to him. He just wanted a challenge. Was that so much to ask for? Everyone praised Light, everyone was proud of him. But was he proud of himself? He didn't seem to have any reason to be. None of it felt like work. It felt like he was waiting for something to happen to him. Something to flip the world over and devolve into chaos. Maybe then he would have something to look forward to.
